The Beatles (#1) - Evan’s 111 Artists
My first live music experience was Beatlemania on Broadway. I was young, but I remember how loud it was, the music had a raw & strong punch. Everyone was standing on their seats and screaming. Live music was the shit, I was instantly all-in.
It felt so different than listening to the records, it felt bigger, a shared energy.
Years later, likely 10 blocks further downtown in NYC, Diane and I walked down the aisle to a live string version of Here There and Everywhere. I’ve taken my family to see Love in Vegas three times, I always cry.
The Beatles were my first lesson in band dynamics- the power of strong individuals feeding off one another, making the collective bigger than one of them. I was a Lennon guy, also intrigued by George’s quiet-cool. Ringo took me a while though I noted a unique and simple-seaming style, and I always valued Paul’s talent and contributions, he just rubbed me wrong.
The Beatles were my first love, and nearly every song makes me think of family.
Except Revolution— that takes me straight back to the EBHS (if you know, you know) Battle of the Bands ’88, featuring Carl’s vocals, our fuzzy guitars, and Brian’s grin.
“Dad, you always say this song is a F*CKING MASTERPIECE… make a list.”
